Research or application focus

In this lesson, we will first examine big picture processes such as selecting focus areas and measuring success, before moving on to the logistics of team enablement.

One thing that is so inviting about quantum is that it is poised to fundamentally alter an amazing breadth of fields and industries. But that breadth of possibility can also hinder success, if a quantum team does not focus on one area (or a few, well-defined areas). It is therefore critical to pick an area of research and application, early on.

How do you go about defining a research focus? This will have obvious interplay with the make-up of your team, and their expertise, as well as with the core goals of your organization, such as focusing on fundamental research vs. on industry applications. Let’s hear from our partner speakers about how they define a research focus.

Key points:

Start with your comfort zone(s) and branch out.

Being a QIC or other IBM Quantum Network partner positions you to note and leverage similarities between challenges in different fields and economic sectors.

Listen to your stakeholders.

Prioritize based on potential impact.

Priorities

The field of quantum computing is developing rapidly. As with pinning down a research area, this makes it important to have guiding priorities and clear criteria for success. These will be different for every partner in the IBM Quantum Network. But from years of interacting with our QICs, QCCs, startup, GSI, and enterprise partners, IBM Quantum has distilled common themes in organizations' priorities. Use these as inspiration for your own. Each theme of guiding priorities is paired with potential metrics and measures of success. Some wording may be more appropriate for one partner type or another (such as a QIC having "members").

Let’s hear from QIC leadership how they have gone about establishing guiding priorities for their own quantum endeavors.

Key points:

Keep things simple - focus on problems most interesting/useful to customers.

Actively talk to a wide range of customers.

Listen to what's happening with hardware & software developers, and universities and national labs.

Think about where quantum is going, but also have a vision of where it could go.

Success

Let's now learn whether some of the metrics for success listed above were actually used by any of our speakers, and what other measures they have found valuable.

Key points:

Some success in quantum computing can already be measured in financial returns, though the timescale for returns on investment are likely to be much longer in many industries.

Building skills to experiment in quantum computing constitutes success in many cases.

Advancing science and technology

Number of students and workforce members trained

Building a community

IP and algorithm portfolio

Amount of business use cases you can deliver quantum-ready

Increasing quantum awareness within your organization.
